The manufacturing industry has undergone a significant transformation with the integration of digital technologies, leading to the emergence of "smart" production systems (SPS). SPS, characterized by the convergence of business, operational, and information levels, utilizes technologies such as the industrial internet of things and Digital Twins (DT). DTs, represented digitally through specific models, synchronize with real-world assets to enhance production capabilities. This paper addresses the crucial need for a structured approach in DT development projects, emphasizing alignment with strategic goals, consideration of multi-dimensional complexity, and overcoming technical challenges, including interoperability and data integration. The primary goal is to establish a conceptual framework for DT development, specifying business and use case-related requirements for the DT system.
